The child asked, "Here I am in Heen, I don't do anything else but sing and smile. That's enough for me to be hy."

Of Media

 International media such as TV network and magazine

 always give people in an information age mixed feelings.

 Like many other things, media is double-edged.

 As primary channels of information,

 TV and magazine are convenient and economic sources of information for knowledge, entertainment, and shopping.

 Interestingly,sometimes the same piece of information varies considerably

 in its influences on audiences of different age.

 For example,in a TV commercial,a beautiful lady promotes a certain brand of perfume,

 which supposablely makes girls more attractive to boys.

 For potential grown-up buyers,

 the ad is useful because they might be spending time searching for such products.

 We se time in shopping and making decision by making use of such advertisements.

 However, a age girl might get the wrong idea about the concept of perfume.

 She could get money from her parents to buy the advertised product.

 Worse yet, she might use the eal strategy employed in the commercial

 to get ahead in the future.

 This is classic bad influence of media for young people?s overspending

 and inropriate behiors.

 However, we find it very difficult to weigh between merits and problems of media

 because they are often tightly incorporated.

 For instance, violent scenes in movies are believed to be

 partially responsible for violence-related crimes,

 particularly those committed by young people.

 But on the contrary,such movies also give people a channel to release their anger,anxiety, and pressure.

 Moreover,these movies show us bad and evil as well as punishments for wrongdoings.

 Imagine we live in a world whose media is completely clean in such sense.

 The dark side of media does not disear just because we do not talk about it.

 Nevertheless certain kinds of information such as porn are better kept away from young people.

 In conclusion, media should not be seen simply as bad or good

 because we need to use information properly to the best of our ability.

 But for certain segments of viewers,

 we should be very careful with regard to the content of information

 and take measures to keep viewers from possible harmful influences of media.

Of Studies

 Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.

 Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring;

 for ornament, is in discourse;

 and for ability, is in the judgement and disposition of business.

 For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one;

 but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs,

 come best from those that are learned.

 To spend too much time in studies is sloth;

 to use them too much for ornament,is affectation;

 to make judgement wholly by their rules, is the humour of a scholar.

 They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience:

 for natural abilities are like natural plants,that need pruning by study;

 and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large,

 except they be bounded in by experience.

 Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them;

 for they teach not their own use;

 but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation.

 Read not to contradict and confute;

 nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse;

 but to weigh and consider.

 Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed,and some few to be chewed and digested;

 that is, some books are to be read only in parts;

 others to be read, but not curiously;

 and some few to be read wholly,and with diligence and attention.

 Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others;

 but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books;

 else distilled books are, like common distilled waters, flashy things.

 Reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.

 And therefore,if a man write little,he had need he a great memory;

 if he confer little, he had need he a present wit;

 and if he read little, he had need he much cunning, to seem to know that he does not.

 Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics sule;

 natural philosophy deep; moral gre;

 logic and rhetoric able to contend.

2. A Chip on Your Shoulder

Every week at this time we tell the story of words and expressions used in American English. Some of them are old. Some are new. Together, they form the living speech of the American people.

Some popular expressions are a mystery. No one is sure how they developed. One of these is the expression, carry a chip on your shoulder. A person with a chip on his shoulder is a problem for anybody who must deal with him. He seems to be expecting trouble. Sometimes he seems to be saying, "I'm not hy about anything, but what are you going to do about it?"

A chip is a small piece of something, like a chip of wood. How did this chip get on a person's shoulder? Well, experts say the expression ears to he been first used in the United States more than one hundred years ago.

One writer believes that the expression might he come from an old saying. The saying warns against striking too high, or a chip might fall into your eye. That could be good advice. If you strike high up on a tree with an axe, the chip of wood that is cut off will fall into your eye. The saying becomes a warning about the dangers of attacking people who are in more important positions than you are.

Later, in the United States, some people would put a real chip on their shoulder as a test. They wanted to start a fight. They would wait for someone to be bre enough to try to hit it off.

The word chip ears in a number of special American expressions. Another is chip off the old block. This means that a child is exactly like a parent.

This expression goes back at least to the early six hundreds. The British writer of plays, George Colman, wrote these lines in seven sixty-two. "You'll find him his father's own son, I believe. A chip off the old block, I promise you!"

The word chip can also be used in a threatening way to someone who is suspected of wrongdoing. An investigator may say, "We're going to let the chips fall where they may." This means the investigation is going to be complete and honest. It is also a warning that no one will be protected from being found guilty.

Chips are often used in card games. They represent money. A poker player may, at any time, decide to lee the game. He will turn in his chips in exchange for money or cash.

This lead to another meaning. A person who finished or died was said to he cashed in his chips. Which is a way of saying it is time for me to finish this program.

 Youth

 Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

 Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the etite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

 Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

 Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being?s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing etite for what?s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.

 When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you?ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch wes of optimism, there?s hope you may die young at 80.

Three Days to See(Excerpts)如给我三天光明(节选)

 Three Days to See

 All of us he read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who he a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.

 Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?

 Sometimes I he thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of reciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of ?Eat, drink, and be merry?. But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death.

 In stories the doomed hero is usually sed at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more reciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or he lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.

 Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.

 The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf reciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation ly to those who he lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who he never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little reciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we he until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.

 I he often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more reciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.

If the past has taught us anything, it is that every cause brings effect -- every actionhas a consequence. This thought, in my opinion, is the moral foundation of the universe; it lies equally in this world and the next. We Chinese he a saying: "If a man plants melons, he will reap melons; if he sows beans, he will reap beans." And this is true of every man's life: good begets good, and evil leads to evil. True enough, the sun shines on the saint and sinner alike, and too often it seems that the wicked wax and prosper. But we can say with certitude that, with the individual as with the nation, the flourishing of the wicked is an illusion, for, unceasingly, life keeps books on us all. In the end, we are all the sum total of our actions. Character cannot be counterfeited, nor can it be put on and cast off as if it were a garment to meet the whim of the moment. Like the markings on wood which are ingrained in the very heart of the tree, character requires time and nurture for growth and development. Thus also, day by day, we write our own destiny, for inexorably we become what we do. This, I believe, is the supreme logic and the law of life.

"Thank you for your lication. We would like to congratulate you," the letter read. Those words can make your heart skip a beat and bring tears to your eyes. The feeling of following your dreams is inexplicable and proof that all your hard work was worth it. It is a signpost in life, a trail marker. It is a day you will never forget, the day you opened that envelope and your future was revealed. But what about all those days in-between - the ones that make and break you, the days that are nothing special. Would you he received that acceptance letter had you not attended the college fair at your school? What if you had forgotten to send an essay with your lication, would you he been rejected? In life, one step creates the next. Each day is of equal importance, no matter how good or bad. There is no moment in life that does not matter. Regardless of how insignificant, each choice, each day, each idea, is the birth of the next. Something simple can completely reshape your life. It's just like the Butterfly Effect and you never know what is at the end. To go back in time and change one moment in the many that create your life could change everything that follows. If I've learned anything, it is that everything matters. You can struggle through life in an attempt to create the perfect path, but the truth is you will always wonder if it could he been better. Everything is important and nothing need be changed - to climb up the hill may be difficult, but you'll reach the top no matter which path you choose.

 A most curious and useful thing to realize is that one never knows the impression one is creating on otherpeople. One may often guess pretty accurately whether it is good, bad, or indifferent ? some people render it unnecessary for one to guess, they practically inform one ? but that is not what I mean. I mean muchmore than that. I mean that one has one's self no mental picture corresponding to the mental picture whichone's personality lees in the minds of one's friends. Has it ever struck you that there is a mysterious individual going around, walking the streets, calling at houses for tea, chatting, laughing, grumbling, arguing, and that all your friends know him and he long since added him up and come to a definite conclusion about him ? without saying more than a chance, cautious word to you; and that that person is you? Supposing that you came into a drawing room where you were hing tea, do you think you would recognize yourself as an individuality? I think not. You would be apt to say to yourself as guests do when disturbed in drawing rooms by other guests: ?Who's this chap? See ms rather queer. I hope he won't be a bore.? And yourfirst telling would be slightly hostile. Why, even when you meet yourself in an unsuspected mirror in the very clothes that you he put on that very day and that you know by heart, you are almost always shocked by the realization that you are you. And now and then, when you he gone to the glass to arrange your hair in the full sobriety of early morning, he you not looked on an absolute stranger, and has not that stranger piqued your curiosity? And if it is thus with precise external details of form, colour, and movement, what may it not be with the vague complex effect of the mental and moral individuality?

 A man honestly tries to make a good impression. What is the result? The result merely is that his friends,in the privacy of their minds, set him down as a man who tries to make a good impression. If much depends on the result of a sing le interview, or a couple of interviews, a man may conceivably force another to accept an impression of himself which he would like to convey. But if the receiver of the impression is to he time at his disposal, then the giver of the impression may just as well sit down and put his hands in his pockets, for nothing that he can do will modify or influence in any way the impression that he will ultimately give. The real impress is, in the end, given unconsciously, not consciously; and further, it is received unconsciously, not consciously. It depends partly on both persons. And it is immutably fixed beforehand. There can be no final deception?

 She Walks in Beautyby Lord Byron

 She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

 她在美中徜徉,仿佛夜晚皎洁无云,繁星漫天;

 And all that's best of dark and bright meet in her aspect and her eyes, thus mellowed to that tender light which heen to gaudy day denies.

 One shade the more, one ray the less, had half impaired the nameless grace which wes in every ren tress, or softly lightens o'er her face; where thoughts serenely sweet express how pure, how dear their dwelling place.

 And on that cheek, and o'er that brow, so soft, so calm, yet eloquent;

 The smiles that win, the tints that glow, but tell of days in goodness spent;

 A mind at peace with all below, a heart whose love is innocent!

 On Going a Journey

 One of the pleasantest things in the world is going a journey: but I like to go by myself. I can enjoy society in a room; but out of doors, nature is pany enough for me. I am then never less alone than when alone. "The fields his study, nature was his book."

 I cannot see the wit of walking and talking at the same time. When I am in the country I wish to vegetate like the country. I am not for criticizing hedges and black cattle. I go out for town in order to forget the town and all that is in it. There are those who for this purpose go to watering places, and carry the metropolis with them.

I like more space and fewer obstacles. I like solitude, when I give myself up to it, for the sake of solitude; nor do I ask for "a friend in my retreat, whom I may whisper solitude is sweet." The soul of journey is liberty, perfect liberty, to think, feel, do, just as one pleases.

 We go a journey chiefly to be free of all obstacles and all inconveniences; to lee ourselves behind, much more to get rid of others. It is because I want a little breathing space to ponder on indifferent matters, where contemplation "May plume her feathers and let grow her wings, that in the various bustle of resort were all too ruffled, and sometimes impaired."

 I absent myself from the town for a while, without feeling at a loss the moment I am left by myself. Instead of a friend in a post chaise or in a carriage, to exchange good things with, and vary the same stale topics over again, for once let me he a time free from manners.

 Give me the clear blue sky over my head, and the green turf beneath my feet, a winding road before me, and the three hours' march to dinner — and then to thinking! It is hard if I cannot start some game on these lone heaths.

 I laugh, I run, I leap, I sing for joy! From the point of yonder rolling cloud I plunge into my past being, and revel there as the sun-burnt Indian plunges headlong into the we that wafts him to his native shore. Then long-forgotten things like "sunken wrack and sumless treasuries", burst upon my eager sight, and I begin to feel, think, and be myself again. Instead of an awkward silence, broken by attempts at wit or dull monplaces, mine is that undisturbed silence of the heart which alone is perfect eloquence.

 The benefits of touri ***

 It is exciting to visit different places. As you trel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. Besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. Finally, you can get to know the customs and living habits of the local people. Today people are so fond of trelling that touri *** has bee one of the faster growing industries in most countries.

 The main reason why people trel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, hing worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a widened trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. For another example, spending an annual holiday trelling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not he much of an opportunity to be away from their homelands. When people return from their trel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder.

 Trelling is also one of the best means for learning. You may he read or heard about something but you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. Seeing is believing. Furthermore, if you are a careful observer, you can learn much during your trel about the geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. No matter how well educated you are, there is always a lot for you to learn through trelling. The knowledge acquired from trel, as you will he found in your life, is no less valuable than that from any influential reference book

Trel Alone

 I think there is no one would say “no” to trel. People love trel, for it can make them relax and widen their vision. Some people like to trel with friends, because they want to share the pleasure of treling, and they think the journey will be much easier for they can take care of each other. While some people like to trel alone, they can go anywhere in anytime. They don’t he to care about what the partner’s idea. In my opinion, I’m much preferred to trel with friends, but I always he an urge to trel alone.

 Firstly, I was told that trel alone can help people to grow up quickly, and that’s what I really need. If you trel alone, you he to do everything by yourself in the journey, for instance, to buy a ticket, to book hotel, and ask directions. That maybe just a *** all case for extrovert, but for introvert, like me, it’s really a big challenge. I remember the first time I go to trel with friends and my little brother, they did everything, and I just follow and had fun. I even too shame to check into a hotel, and my little brother did it for me. I was humiliated for that. So, trel alone could force introvert to do the things that you don’t dare to do. It could help you to build an outgoing personality. For extrovert, trel alone could enhance your ability to handle emergence case.

 Secondly, trel alone gives you peace of mind. Image that, you walking alone in the beach, there are no sounds of human beings, just burst of sound wes. You close your eyes, enjoy the moment, you will feel peace.

 In short, trel alone could be loneliness and dangerous, especially for girls, but it’s worth hing a try for the beautiful scene in the journey, it seems like all the things are just exist for you.
