Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the etite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlikeetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch wes of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
Life is a struggle. I shall never forget the most striking part of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow' s poem -- A Psalm of Life: "In the world's blood field of battle, In the bivouac of life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!"
Ludwig van Beethoven was a typical "hero in the strife". He was not only one of the greatest composers, but also one of the most persevering men. As a deaf man, he went on working with his strong will in the last year of his life, though he was not able to hear his own fine and original music. Another example of persistence in struggle is Deng Yaping. She once said that her technique came from continuous training, emphasizing the importance of daily practice to a player.
As a student, I seem to be in a boat sailiug against the current. I must make an effort to forge ahead. A little carelessness will result in being driven back. Indeed, learning is a struggle against idleness and carelessness. Following the examples of Ludwig van Beethoven and Deng Yaping, I shall take great pains to urge myself on, moving steadily forward like a heroic boatman in the rough sea of knowledge.
No Pains, No Gains
The proverb “No pains, no gains” means that you he to make great efforts if you want to achieve success, for nothing but poverty can be oained without effort.
In history, there he been many famous people of great achievements. You may claim that they are geniuses. But behind their successes, they he made great efforts in carrying out their tasks. Einstein said “Genius is one percent of inspiration and ninety-nine percent of perspiration.” He had been working hard for many years before he finally worked out his theory of relativity. Thomas Edison experienced countless failures before he finally invented the electric bulb. Wang Junxia was able to win the world championship of long distance race only because she had many years of hard training. Therefore, diligence is the key to success. Douless hard work promises fruitful result. Everyone is awarded the right to work hard in order to reach his goal. Apparently, diligence is necessary to success. Hiness is nearly always a reward for hard work.
On the other hand, idleness is believed to be the root of all evil. Anyone who habitually likes idling but desires everything is daydreaming. We should be aware that if we dream away our precious time, when we wake up, it may be too late for us to achieve anything. So, as college students, we should never stop working hard so that we will remain successful in the future competitions.
Between the darkness of earth and heen she was burning fiercely upon a disc of purple sea shot by the blood-red play of gleams; upon a disc of water glittering and sinister.
A high, clear flame, an immense and lonely flame, ascended from the ocean, and from its summit the black smoke poured continuously at the sky. She burned furiously, mournful and imposing like a funeral pile kindled in the night, surround-ed by the sea, watched over by the stars.
A magnificent death had come like a grace, like a gift, like a reward to that old ship at the end of her laborious days. The surrender of her weary ghost to the keeping of stars and sea was stirring like the sight of a glorious triumph.
The masts fell just before daybreak, and for a moment there was a burst and turmoil of sparks that seemed to fill with flying fire the night patient and watchful, the vast night lying silent upon the sea.

ladies and gentlemen:
Good afternoon,
Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical therapist who treled all the way from America to Africa to do a census about mountain gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poaching and being put into the zoo. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.
Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my forite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Diana Fossey, who spent most of her lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.
2This kind of feeling that I he, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it , it's all coming from a scene to be remembered, a scene to recall and to cherish.
Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur - natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges are devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.
All these alling facts he brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been eroding our resources. Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global trel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 20xx the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.
5You may wonder if I believe in afterlife. My answer is: I know nothing about my previous life, so I dare not make improper comments on afterlife. But I do hope there's afterlife! Because our present life is so short that so many things slip away before our proper understanding. I he so many dreams, so many wishes, so many ambitions, as well as so many regrets and concerns. If there were no afterlife, all of them will remain unrealized!
I'm not contented with the present commonplace life, I'm very much attached to the affections that should he been mine but he been washed away by the hurrying time, and I yearn for the perfection and maturity if I could start all over again. So believe it or not, I'd rather there were afterlife.

One day he and his prairie chicken friend saw a beautiful bird soaring on the currents of air, high above the mountains.

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.
About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.
While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all he our fears, and you he yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.”
I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the brest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!
As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I he faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!
Thank you.

Good morning:Honorable judges, dear teachers and close friends. I’m very glad to stand here to share my speech with you. Today I’m going to talk about Love and Take care of Nature. Each life on the earth has a long and touching evolutionary story. From the origin, the lives of the human being are equal to those of others; they both are the composing parts of Mother Nature. Nevertheless, for some inexplicable reasons, the human becomes the spirits of all creatures. Of course, it is the result of the evolution, but still we should be grateful to all our companions in nature for the opportunity they offer. In spite of this, humans cannot live without earth.
They live on the earth, drink the sweet water, and enjoy the sunshine, the air, the sky, the fruit; the grains utilize the energy and so on. In a word, the human being cannot live without nature, and Mother Nature makes us grow stronger. I do not like the word "Pet", but preferring the word "Animal" instead. I he been loving animal since I was just a little boy. When thinking of the "Pet Fashion", I always feel much annoyed. For the animals will be given a shackle and lose their liberty if they become someone\'s pets. Their natural attribution can be deprived, too. Up to now, relying on their scientific power, the human he opened up too much and over developed nature, in order to fill up their growing etites of wealth.
They destroy the balance of nature, however, they don\'t realize, their own development and existence will be threatened. Therefore, our sights should be focused on nature and we should try to develop the concept of "keeping human and nature in unity". We should lay emphasis on our education with consider cultural and natural emotion. To use the vivid example to wake up the conscience in people's hearts.

Good afternoon! Ladies and gentlemen!
I am very hy to he the opportunity to attend this Competition.
My topic today is “Never Say Sorry Again!”
Do you feel sorry for the animals that are killed by the millions every day?
Do we really need to kill animals?
Let us now think of the reasons for using dead animals. People often use animals for food, make-up, medicine and especially for the clothes. Fur coats are definitely a luxury. Yes, they are warm but really they are mostly a symbol of wealth. Do you know how much a mink coat cost?
A report said in an open letter published recently, a Dutch animal-rights group has asked their much-loved Queen to stop wearing fur. The Group pointed out that making clothing from fur represents cruelty to animals. “ Fur belongs to animals, not to human beings.”
Nowadays a lot of greedy people hunt and kill wild animals and birds, so as to make money by selling their hides at high prices. This kind of killing should be stopped and seriously punished. If we don't take actions to protect the wild animals and birds, they will soon disear from the globe. Man will one day find himself a very lonely creature on earth indeed.
Until such a day, when we finally realized that we no longer he these friends or neighbors, what are we human beings going to say? Sorry? No, it is too late to say sorry to them.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please consider what I he said to you this afternoon. Think carefully on whether we really need to use animals for our pleasure if you he come to the conclusion that we are wrong. Then we should now change our attitude so that we never say sorry again to the animal population.
Thank you!

Not long after an old Chinese woman came back to China from her visit to her daughter in the States, she went to a city bank to deposit the US dollars her daughter ge her. At the bank counter, the clerk checked each note carefully to see if the money was real. It made the old lady out of patience.
At last she could not hold any more, uttering. "Trust me, Sir, and trust the money. They are real US dollars. They are directly from America."
She kindled a third match. Again shot up the flame; and now she was sitting under a most beautiful Christmas tree ,far larger, and far more prettily decked out, than the one she had seen last Christmas eve through the glass doors of the rich merchant's house. Hundreds of wax-tapers lighted up the green branches, and tiny painted figures, such as she had seen in the shop-windows, looked down from the tree upon her. The child stretched out her hands towards them in delight, and in that moment the lights of the match warm quenched; still, however, the Christmas candles burned higher and higher, she beheld them beaming like stars in heen; one of them fell, the lights streaming behind it like a long, fiery tail.
“Now some one is dying,” said the little girl, softly, for she had been told by her old grandmother, the only person who had ever been kind to her, and who was now dead that whenever a star falls an immortal spirit returns to the God who ge it.
She struck yet another match against the wall; it flamed up, and surrounded by its light, eared before her that same dear grandmother, gentle and loving as always, but bright and hy as she had never looked during her lifetime.
BUYING A HAT
A lady went to a hat shop to buy a hat. As she was very fussy, it took her a long time to pick on one. Already at the end of his patience the salesman was afraid that she might change her mind again so he tried to flatter her: "An excellent choice, madam. You look at least ten years younger with this hat on!" To his dismay, the lady took off her hat at once and said: "I don't want a hat that makes me look ten years older as soon as I take it off. Show me some more hats!"

:Making Peace with Russia
The late Boris Nyof is being a nonperson. He was president of Akmenistan, a tiny but oil-rich country near Russia. The new president, Ivan Gurba, has banned all media use of Nyof’s name. Gurba has removed all the photos, posters, and statues of Nyof. In the capital city, Gurba has ordered the destruction of a stainless steel spire honoring Nyof. Gurba shut down the spire's floodlights and mechani *** s.
“From the steel, we will build a Museum of Peace,” said Gurba. The 100-foot-tall spire was brilliantly lit every night for the last 10 years. At its top was a likeness of Nyof’s head, 16 feet in diameter. The head made a plete revolution every 59 minutes. Then it paused for one minute, while flames shot out of Nyof’s mouth, acpanied by the roar of a lion.
Every day at noon, “Nyof” ge a three-minute speech talking about what a great president he had been. There was a different speech for each day of the year. Every January 18, for example, Nyof talked about how he had ped all of Akmenistan’s dirt roads—by himself. Every July 3, he described how he had invented the Internet.
As president, Nyof actually had renamed the days of the week after his siblings, and the sun and moon after his parents. He had banned marriage. Instead, couples in love signed one-year “Friendship” contracts, renewable yearly—if both “friends” agreed.
Although citizens thought Nyof was a little weird, they liked him for boldly standing up to occasional threats from Russia. Now that he was gone, Russia seemed more intent on acquiring Akmenistan’s oil—one way or another. Gurba thought that he might help prevent a Russian invasion by removing all traces of Nyof and by building the Museum of Peace.
:Same-Sex Marriage
On May 15, 2008, the California Supreme Court roved same- marriages in the state of California. By a vote of 4 to 3, the court declared that limiting a marriage to a union between a man and a woman violated the state constitution.
The court’s decision was a huge victory for gays and le *** ians throughout the state. Hundreds waited outside the courthouse in Sacramento for the announcement, which they greeted with cheers, hugs, and kisses. TV crews interviewed joyful couples.
However, conservative opponents he vowed to fight the decision. They plan to gather over a million signatures for a constitutional amendment in November to overturn this decision. If California voters rove the amendment, lawyer Gloria Allred said, “I will take this case to the US Supreme Court. Gays must be free to marry.”
It was only 60 years ago that most states banned interracial marriages. However, in 1967 the US Supreme Court ended those bans. Now the conflict is about instead of race. At present, only two states legally recognize same- marriages—Massachusetts and California. Worldwide, only five countries legally recognize such marriages.
“California has joined the 21st century,” said Elton John. “Now Cole Porter and I can finally get married in our forite city, San Francisco.”
“If we normal people don't vote for the amendment,” said conservative George Smith, “God will surely destroy this entire state.”
:I’m Pregnant
He was a senior in high school, and she was a junior. They had met in algebra class at the beginning of the school year. He was a math whiz; she wanted to be an English teacher. They helped each other with their homework. He helped her solve “x + 4y = 8,” and she helped him write 250-word essays.
They loved going to the beach on weekends. When it was cold and windy, they dressed warmly and walked for miles. When it was hot, they wore their swimsuits and spent hours in the water and on the sand. They talked about everything under the sun. She had fallen in love with him. He wasn’t in love with her, but he sometimes told her that he was. He really enjoyed her pany, but he figured that when he started college, he would find new girlfriends. There were plenty of fish in the sea.
One day at the beach, however, she told him she was pregnant. “Are you sure?” he asked, after a moment of silence. She was. “Well, what are you going to do?” he asked. She said she was hoping that they would get married. “You can’t be serious,” he said. “We’re both way too young to get married. We hen’t even graduated high school yet.”
Besides, he said, without jobs they couldn’t begin to afford a baby. He had a friend who knew someone who could solve this problem—for a fee. Don't worry, he said, he’d pay the fee.
“I think we ought to keep our baby,” she said. He told her not to worry about it—they would start a family after college.

In this competitive society it is essential to know how to sell yourself in order to get the job you want. That means you must be able to market your best features and present yourself in the best light. After all, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
There are several things you can do to project a good image in an interview. First of all, look like a winner. Dress conservatively and well, and you'll look like you're going to the top. Second, communicate clearly. Consider each question carefully and respond with total honesty. Remember to make eye contact and maintain good posture. You need to look attentive but also at ease. Third, he a positive and assertive attitude. It's important to ear confident of your ability and optimistic about your future. Finally, be prepared. Present a professional resume and be ready to explain everything in detail.
By following the advice above, you are bound to make a good impression on potential employers. Then you will be able to choose the best opportunity for you and take that first step towards success.
I received a devastating blow to my self'confidence in the first interview of my college years. I lied to be a host in our Student Acting Troupe and felt confident that I would be accepted. But one of the panel members told me: ?You seem inadequate and you are a little vertically'challenged.? My life has never been the same since. I used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. But no matter how hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing. As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White for an English party. Unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English. Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would he to be the dwarf. To my great surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was a big hit.
Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.
A world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. The real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but hing your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.
Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White among nothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. I would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. Please, be yourself.
Let me begin my speech with a replay of scenes familiar to most, if not all, of those present here today. ?Mum, I'm sorry, but I need 3,000 yuan for my tuition this year.?
?Mum, it is my friend's birthday tomorrow, I must buy her a present.?
?Mum, this jacket was out of fashion long ago, would you do me a for
Take. Take. Take. The relationship between a mother and a child always seems to follow such a pattern. I know my mother is always there for me, providing me with everything I need; from food to clothing, from tuition to pocket money. I never thought twice about all she did until one day she said, ?Will there be a time that you'll say you he taken enough from me
Like a child endlessly asking, we humans, throughout history, he been continually demanding what we desire from nature. We enjoy the comfort and beauty of our furniture, yet we never bother to think about the serious soil erosion caused by deforestation. We take it for granted that we must warm ourselves in winter times, yet we seldom realize the burning away of precious natural resources. We reciate all the prosperity from the development of modern industry, yet few would give the slightest consideration to the global air and water pollution caused by industrial wastes. Our ruthless exploitation has permanently impaired our mother earth. As we tragically learned from last summer's floods. we cannot continue our carelessness.
