A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age. ?

Looking into the sunset I can't help but notice

that despite her beauty,

a sense of struggle and hopeless surround the sky .

Deep inside you realize that this day is gone,

and everything that It had brought is lost forever.

Every thought,every action,every dream,every hope,

every sight,every sound is gone.

There is no chance of every being returned the same,

exactly the same.

For every moment has a limit to what it can capture,

Every memory has a limit to what it had retrieve.

And the colours in the sky try to entertain us.

one last act with painted smiles,

for they too know that nothing can be done to se the day.

So futile their attempt to comfort our fear of the night.

our horror as we try to find our way,

like children who wanderinto a forest and never return.

I am ingratiatedby the sunset because of

her sensitivity as she tries to push the darkness

back for just a moment more.

But like so many times before....to no ail!

Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they he for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, ‘Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this:” Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their forite author. They live in him together, and he in them.

A good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.

Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time he been to sift out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive e but what is really good.

As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inex-haustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and reliable warrant of success in times of uncertainty.

We're Just Beginning

"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite…”

I do not know who wrote those words, but I he always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

I want the future to be better than the past. I don't want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.

The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeor.

Consider… YOU!In all time before now and in all time to come, there has never been and will never be anyone just like you. You are unique in the entire history and future of the universe. Wow! Stop and think about that. You're better than one in a million, or a billion, or a gazillion…

You are the only one like you in a sea of infinity!!!

You're amazing! You're awesome! And by the way, T, you're it. As amazing and awesome as you already are, you can be even more so. Beautiful young people are the whimsey of nature, but beautiful old people are true works of art. But you don't become “beautiful” just by virtue of the aging process.

Real beauty comes from learning, growing, and loving in the ways of life. That is the Art of Life. You can learn slowly, and sometimes painfully, by just waiting for life to hen to you. Or you can choose to accelerate your growth and intentionally devour life and all it offers. You are the artist that paints your future with the brush of today.

Paint a Masterpiece.

God gives every bird its food, but he doesn't throw it into its nest. Wherever you want to go, whatever you want to do, it's truly up to you.

三Hour in the Sun/阳光下的时光

“…I was rich, if not in money, in sunny hours and summer days.”----- Henry Did Thoreau.

When Thoreau wrote that line, he was thinking of the Walden. Pond he knew as a boy.

Woodchoppers and the Iron Horse had not yet greatly damaged the beauty of its setting. A boy could go to the pond and lie on his back against the seat of a boat, lazily drifting from shore to shore while the loons dived and the swallows dipped around him. Thoreau loved to recall such sunny hours and summer days “when idleness was the most attractive and productive business.”

I too was a boy in love with a pond, rich in sunny hours and summer days. Sun and summer are still what they always were, but the boy and the pond changed. The boy, who is now a man, no longer find much time for idle drifting. The pond has been annexed by a great city. The swamps where herons once hunted are now drained and filled with houses. The bay where water lilies quietly floated is now a harbor for motor boats. In short, everything that the boy loved no longer exists----except in the man's memory of it.

Some people insist that only today and tomorrow matter. But how much poorer we would be if we really lived by that rule! So much of what we do today is frivolous and futile and soon forgotten. So much of what we hope to do tomorrow never hens.

The past is the bank in which we store our most valuable possession: the memories that give meaning and depth to our lives.

Those who truly treasure the past will not bemoan the passing of the good old days, because days enshrined in memory are never lost. Death itself is powerless to still a remembered voice or erase a remembered smile. And for one boy who is now a man, there is a pond which neither time nor tide can change, where he can still spend a quite hour in the sun.

四On Motes and Beams 微尘与栋梁

It is curious that our own offenses should seem so much less heinous than the offenses of others. I suppose the reason is that we know all the circumstances that he occasioned them and so manage to excuse in ourselves what we cannot excuse in others. We turn our attention away from our own defects, and when we are forced by untoward events to consider them, find it easy to condone them. For all I know we are right to do this; they are part of us and we must accept the good and bad in ourselves together.

But when we come to judge others, it is not by ourselves as we really are that we judge them, but by an image that we he fomp3ed of ourselves fro which we he left out everything that offends our vanity or would discredit us in the eyes of the world. To take a trivial instance: how scornful we are when we catch someone out telling a lie; but who can say that he has never told not one, but a hundred?

There is not much to choose between men. They are all a hotchpotch of greatness and littleness, of virtue and vice, of nobility and baseness. Some he more strength of character, or more opportunity, and so in one direction or another give their instincts freer play, but potentially they are the same. For my part, I do not think I am any better or any worse than most people, but I know that if I set down every action in my life and every thought that has crossed my mind, the world would consider me a monster of deprity. The knowledge that these reveries are common to all men should inspire one with tolerance to oneself as well as to others. It is well also if they enable us to look upon our fellows, even the most eminent and respectable, with humor, and if they lead us to take ourselves not too seriously.

Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright!

The bridal of the earth and sky--

The dew shall weep thy fall tonight;

For thou must die.

Sweet rose, whose hue angry and bre,

Bids the rash gazer wipe his eye,

And thou must die.

Sweet spring, full of sweet days and roses,

My music shows ye he your closes,

The Life I Desired

That must be the story of innumerable couples, and the pattern of life it offers has a homely grace. It reminds you of a placid rivulet, meandering *** oothly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant trees, till at last it falls into the vasty sea; but the sea is so calm, so silent, so indifferent, that you are troubled suddenly by a vague uneasiness. Perhaps it is only by a kink in my nature, strong in me even in those days, that I felt in such an existence, the share of the great majority, something amiss. I recognized its social value. I saw its ordered hiness, but a fever in my blood asked for a wilder course. There seemed to me something alarming in such easy delights. In my heart was desire to live more dangerously. I was not unprepared for jagged rocks and treacherous shoals if I could only he change--change and the excitement of unforeseen.

A Greek to Remember

Diogenes was a famous Greek philosopher of thefourth century B.C., who established the philosophy ofcynici *** . He often walked about in the daytime holding alighted lantern, peering around as if he were looking forsomething. When questioned about his odd behior, hewould reply, "I am searching for an honest man."

Diogenes held that the good man was self-sufficientand did not require material forts or wealth. Hebelieved that wealth and possessions constrainedhumanity's natural state of freedom. In keeping with hisphilosophy, he was perfectly satisfied with making hishome in a large tub discarded from the Temple of Cybele, the goddess of nature. This earthen tub, called a pithos, and formerly been used for holding wine or oil for thesacrifices at the temple.

One day, Alexander the Great, conqueror of half thecivilized world, saw Diogenes sitting in his tub in thesunshine. So the king, surrounded by his countries, roached Diogenes and said, "I am Alexander theGreat." The philosopher replied rather contemptuously, "Iam Diogenes, the Cynic." Alexander then asked him if hecould help him in any way. "Yes," shot back Diogenes, "don't stand between me and the sun." A surprisedAlexander then replied quickly, "If I were not Alexander, Iwould be Diogenes."

A bald man took a seat in a beauty shop. "How can I help you?" asked the stylist. "I went for a hair transplant," the guy explained, "but I couldn't stand the pain.

Are you kidding me?

Are you kidding me? Are you kidding on me? You must be kidding.

A certain good woman one day said something that hurt her best friend of many years. She regretted immediately and would he done anything to he taken the words back . What she said hurt the friend so much that this good woman was herself hurt for the pain she caused . In an effort to undo what she had done , she went to an older ,wise woman in the village, explained her situation ,and asked for advice.

Listening to her ,the older woman sensed the younger woman's distress and knew she must help her . She also knew she could never alleviate the pain , but she could teach . She knew the oute would depend solely on the character of the younger woman . She said ,"Tonight ,take your best feather pillows and put single feather on the doorstep of each house in the town before the sun rises."

The young woman hurried home to prepare for her chore ,even though the feather pillows were very dear to her .All night long ,she labored alone in the cold. Finally the sky was getting light ,she placed the last feather on the steps of the last house .Just as the sun rose, she returned to the older woman.

"Now", said the wise woman," go back and refill your pillows with the feather you he put on the steps .then everything will be as it was before."

"You know that's impossible! the wind blew away each feather as fast as I placed them on the doorsteps!" the young woman was surprised .

"That's true," said the older woman." never forget. each of your words is like a feather in the wind. once spoken, no amount of effort, regardless how heartfelt or sincere, can never return them to your mouth. Choose your words well and guard them most of all the presence of those of you love."

1、Many people believe that they will be hy once they arrive at some specific goal they set for themselves. However, more often than not, once you arrive " there" you will still feel dissatisfied, and move your " there" vision to yet another point in the future. By always chasing after another "there," you are never really reciating what you already he right "here." It is important for human beings to keep soberminded about the age-old drive to look beyond the place where you now stand. On one hand, your life is enhanced by your dreams and aspirations. On the other hand, these drives can pull you farther and farther from your enjoyment of your life right now. By learning the lessons of gratitude and abundance, you can bring yourself closer to fulfilling the challenge of living in the present.

2、Alan and Linda always dreamed of living "the good life." Both from poor working-class families, they married young and set out to fulfill their mutual goal of becoming wealthy. They both worked very hard for years, amassing a small fortune, so they could move from their two-bedroom home to a palatial seven-bedroom home in the most upscale neighborhood. They focused their energies on accumulating all the things they believed signified abundance: membership in the local exclusive country club, luxury cars, designer clothing, and high-class society friends. No matter how much they accumulated, however, it never seemed to be enough. They were unable to erase the deep fear of scarcity both had acquired in childhood. They needed to learn the lesson of abundance. Then the stock market crashed in 1987, and Alan and Linda lost a considerable amount of money. A bizarre but costly lawsuit depleted another huge portion of their sings. One thing led to another, and they found themselves in a financial disaster. Assets needed to be sold, and eventually they lost the country club membership, the cars, and the house. It took several years and much hard work for Alan and Linda to land on their feet, and though they now live a life far from extragant, they he taken stock of their lives and feel quite blessed. Only now, as they assess what they he left -- a solid, loving marriage, their health, a dependable income, and good friends -- do they realize that true abundance comes not from amassing, but rather from reciating.

3、Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the gre. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sing our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization, Therefore, to stay mentally young, we he to take learning as a lifelong career.

One of my patients, a successful busines *** an, tells me that before his cancer he would bee depressed unless things went a certain way. Hiness was "hing the cookie." If you had the cookie, things were good.

If you didn't he the cookie, life wasn't worth a damn. Unfortunately, the cookie kept changing.

Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes . At other times, it was the new car, the biggest contract, the most prestigious address.

A year and a half after his diagnosis of prostate cancer he sits shaking his head ruefully. "It's like I stopped learning how to live after I was a kid.

When I give my son a cookie, he is hy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhy.

But he is two and a half and I am forty-three. It's taken me this long to understand that the cookie will never make me hy for long.

The minute you he the cookie it starts to crumble or you start to worry about it crumbling or about someone trying to take it away from you.

You know, you he to give up a lot of things to take care of the cookie, to keep it from crumbling and be sure that no one takes it away from you.

You may not even get a chance to eat it because you are so busy just trying not to lose it.

Hing the cookie is not what life is about." My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him.

For the first time he is hy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins or loses at golf. "

Two years ago, cancer asked me, 'Okay, what's important? What is really important?' Well, life is important.

Life. Life any way you can he it, life with the cookie, life without the cookie. Hiness does not he anything to do with the cookie; it has to do with being alive. Before, who made the time?" He pauses thoughtfully. "Damn, I guess life is the cookie."

How wonderful are islands! Islands in space, like this one I he e to, ringed about by milesof water, linked by on bridges, no cables, no telephones.

An lsland from the world and the world's life. Islands is time, like this short vacation of mine.

The past and the future are cut off: only the present remains.

One lives like a child or a saint in the immediacy of here and now.

Every day, every act, is an island, washed by time and space, and has an island's pletion.

People, too, bee like islands in such an atmosphere, self-contained, whole and serene;respecting other people's solitude, not intruding on their shores, standing back in reverncebefore the miracle of another individual.

"No man is an island," said John Donne. I feel we are all islands--in a mon sea.

We are all, in the last *** ysis, alone.

And this basic state of solitude is not something we he any choice about.

It is , as the poet Rilke says, "not something that one can take or lee".

We are solitary. We may delude ourselves and act as though this were not so, yes, even tobegin by assuming it."Naturally," he goes on to say,"we will turn giddy."

We seem so frightened today of being alone that we never let it hen. Even if family, friends, and movies should fail, there is still the radio or television to fill up the void.

Women, who used to plain of loneliness, need never be alone any more.

We can do our housework with soap-opera heroes at our side. Even day-dreaming was morecreative than this; it demanded something of oneself and it fed the inner life.

Now instead of planting our solitude with our dream bolssoms, we choke the space withcontinuous music, chatter and panionship to which we do not even listen.

It is simply there to fill the vacuum. When the noise stops there is no inner music to take itsplace. We must relearn to be alone.

Years of storms had taken their toll on the old windmill. Its wheel, rusted and fallen, lay silent in the lush bluegrass. Its once animated silhouette was now a tall motionless steeple in the twilight sun.

I hadn‘t walked across our old farm in fif years. Yet the sensations came flooding back. I could *** ell the freshness of new mown alfalfa. I could feel the ping of the ice cold summer rain, and the sun‘s sudden warmth on my wet shoulders when it reeared after a brisk July thunderstorm.

Rain or shine, I used to walk this path each day to see Greta. She always made me *** ile, even after Sis and I had just had a big squabble. I would help Greta with her chores. Then we would visit over a generous helping of her delicious homemade chocolate cookies and ice cream. Being confined to a wheel chair didn‘t stop Greta from being a fabulous cook.

Greta ge me two of the greatest gifts I‘ve ever received. First, she taught me how to read. She also taught me that when I forge Sis for our squabbles, it meant I wouldn‘t keep feeling like a victim. Instead, I would feel sunny.

Mr. Dinking, the local banker, tried to foreclose on Greta‘s house and land after her hu *** and passed away. Thanks to Pa and Uncle Johan, Greta got to keep everything. Pa said that it was the least he could do for someone talented enough to teach me to read!

Soon folks were ing from miles around to buy Greta‘s homemade cakes, pies, breads, cookies, cider, and ice cream. Hank, the grocery store man, came each week to stock his shelves and bring Greta supplies.

Greta even had me take a big le pie to Mr. Dinking who became one of her best customers and friends. That‘s just how Greta was. She could turn anyone into a friend!

Greta always said, "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!" No matter how terrible my day started, I always felt sunny walking home from Greta‘s house-even beneath the winter starlight.

I arrived at Greta‘s house today just after sunset. An ambulance had stopped a few feet from her door, it‘s red lights flashing. When I ran into the old house, Greta recognized me right away.

She *** iled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. She was almost out of breath when she reached out and softly touched my arm. Her last words to me were "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!"

I‘m sure that Greta is walking in the brightest sunshine she‘s ever seen. And, I‘m sure that she heard every word I read at her memorial service.

I chose a beautiful verse by Leo Buscaglia. It‘s one that Greta taught me to read many years ago…

"Love can never grow old. Locks may lose their brown and gold. Cheeks may fade and hollow grow. But the hearts that love will know, never winter‘s frost and chill, summer‘s warmth is in them still."
